On the last (full) day of my 30th birthday adventure extravaganza at Yosemite National Park, I decided to do some reporting.
Yesterday, my amazingly wonderful and patient husband helped me meet Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson, the record setting free climbers that conquered ( sorry Kevin) Yosemite’s El Capitan two days prior.
When you’re a young journalist working for publications that are successful, but nowhere near as well known as National Geographic or The New York Times, it’s hard to get yourself noticed. Regardless, it’s an effort that needs to be made.
There were millions of reporters around, interviewing, photographing, filming segments, with and about the two free climbers. We decided to be some of them, and with that my husband served as the cameraman and producer of my first media soundbite.
I now understand why after 15-20 takes, people start nervously giggling in front of the camera – to get a segment right is way more difficult than it looks. But you have to start somewhere.
