Creating an Instant Classic – Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel

Few films have left me feeling as wonderful and elated as Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) – as far as I am concerned, the movie is an instant classic. Everything about it is just so damn perfect, from the script to the casting to the visual elements that drive it. This is precisely why the film was back in theaters by popular demand this winter.

The Grand Budapest Hotel won 5 BAFTA awards for Best Original Screenplay (Wes Anderson), Best Music (Alexandre Desplat), Best Production Design (Adam Stockhausen), Best Costume Design (Milena Canonero), and Best Hair and Makeup Design (Frances Hannon). The Grand Budapest Hotel was also nominated for 9 Academy Awards as well as 2 Golden Globes – winning 1 for Best Motion Picture (comedy or musical), and many others. Check out the full list here.

Inspired by Old Hollywood films, the clip below features Wes Anderson discussing how The Grand Budapest Hotel came together, why he chose to make it the way he did, and how the actors responded to working on the instant classic. Enjoy.
