My reading suggestion of the day is An Underground Education: The Unauthorized and Outrageous Supplement To Everything You Thought You Knew About Art, Sex, Business, Crime, Science, Medicine, and Other Fields of Human Knowledge by Richard Zacks.
I first learned about this book some 15 years ago from a high school friend. Reading it then was just as interesting as reading it now; it has so much information that it’s simply impossible to remember everything the first time you get through it. But the more you read it, the more that information takes on new meaning when examined in our ever changing context. It’s always relevant, always insightful. Out of all the books I own, I come back to this one the most often.
From world history (spies with a twist) to sex (vintage misconceptions) and science (wrongly credited inventions), it has information that you will never learn about in school. For reasons that I will never understand, a large portion of our population is starting to believe that we have to shelter young people from all types of information, a backlash on intellectualism if you will, and this book is one big kick in their asses and I think everyone should read – repeatedly. It is not a water-downed account of human knowledge, it’s a celebration of how far we’ve come and a good reason to keep moving forward.
